Taking Care of Yourself Matters
Caregivers often focus so completely on their loved one that their own health and well-being are pushed aside. Taking time to care for yourself is not selfish—it helps you continue providing safe and compassionate care.
Try to:
-
Ask trusted relatives or friends for specific help
-
Schedule regular medical appointments for yourself
-
Rest whenever safe help is available
-
Eat regularly and stay hydrated
-
Keep a written list of medications and care instructions
-
Join a caregiver support group
-
Speak with a counselor, faith leader, or trusted professional
-
Explore respite care before reaching a crisis point
-
Call for immediate help if caregiving becomes unsafe or unmanageable
You deserve support, rest, and compassion too.
Planning for Your Loved One’s Care
Keeping important information organized can make appointments, emergencies, and care transitions easier.
Consider maintaining a caregiver folder containing:
-
Current medications and dosages
-
Medical conditions and allergies
-
Healthcare providers and contact information
-
Insurance and benefits information
-
Emergency contacts
-
Legal documents and advance directives
-
Medical or durable power of attorney documents
-
Daily routines and support needs
-
Transportation arrangements
-
Preferred hospital and pharmacy
-
Questions for upcoming appointments
Share essential information only with trusted individuals and authorized service providers.
